The complete sock guide
Sock heights, fibres, knits and fit explained, so you can pick the right pair for every shoe, season and activity.
Sock heights at a glance
No-show
Hidden inside low shoes such as loafers and canvas trainers.
Ankle
Just covers the ankle bone; ideal for trainers and running.
Quarter
Sits a little above the ankle and protects from shoe rub.
Crew
The everyday classic, reaching mid-calf for most people.
Mid-calf
A neat choice for boots and smart trousers.
Knee-high
Warm under boots and a style statement with skirts or shorts.
Choosing the right fibre
Most socks are blends: a main fibre for comfort plus nylon for strength and a little elastane for stretch. Look at the first fibre on the label to understand how a sock will feel.
| Fibre | Feels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Merino wool | Warm, breathable, resists odour | Hiking, winter, travel |
| Cotton | Soft, breathable, affordable | Everyday wear in mild weather |
| Bamboo-derived viscose | Smooth and cool to the touch | Warm days, sensitive skin |
| Nylon and polyamide | Strong, adds durability | Reinforced heels and toes, sport |
| Elastane | Stretch and recovery | Keeps cuffs up and fit snug |
| Acrylic | Light, warm, easy care | Budget winter socks |
The right sock for the job
Office
Thin, smooth knits in wool or cotton blends, mid-calf so no skin shows when you sit.
Running
Ankle or quarter height, moisture-wicking blend, light cushioning and a snug arch band.
Hiking
Merino-rich crew or mid-calf with cushioned heel and toe to prevent rubbing in boots.
Lounging
Thick, soft knits or knitted wool; add grips on the sole for smooth floors.
Travel
Merino crew socks can be worn more than once and dry quickly after a sink wash.
Winter
Thicker wool blends, but make sure boots still have room so circulation isn’t restricted.
